Vote Off

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

Bucknall squints, sun blazing, sweat drips from his brow. Gilligan stands facing him, dead ahead, hand hovering over his holster, sun to his back and with the advantage. The Notebook. Chick flick supreme or not even worth the effort? Bucknall grants one star for effort. Gilligan gives 3 ’cause although a chick flick is always gonna be overdone, The Notebook holds it’s own. Disagreement leads to a stand off. Barnes throws her vote into the ring .. THREE and a HALF! OMG .. Bucknall’s facing the heat and squeezes off a round to save face but Gilligan dives left as Bucknall rolls right .. the insults fly ..

One more Bond to go

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

Thanks Rory! We’ve now added Never Say Never Again, which only leaves On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (George Lazenby) to fill out our 007 back-collection (Quantum of Solace is due March 16).

And just for some inane trivia .. did you know NSNA was filmed outside of the Bond franchise, which is licenced to the EON production company (started by Ablert Broccoli who first filmed Dr No)? That’s why it’s not part of the ‘Ultimate Edition’ series that we picked up to flesh out our back-catalogue. In fact… NSNA is now a deleted DVD so thanks to Rory for trading it in :-)

The APPLEBOX Christmas Party!

Saturday, February 7th, 2009

When you run a business that is open seven days a week and only closed on christmas day and 4 people do it all it’s hard to find a time to go out together. We are one of those workplaces where we actually like each other and want to do that! Whilst I hear everyone say don’t become too friendly with your staff how could you resist the charms of T’mara and Andrew?!!

Needless to say we made up for all those missed Friday night drinks at our Christmas Party on Wednesday night. Mid week functions are great as it’s the quiet time and our good friend Darrell can help us out but mid week is not so good for the working week… Andrew was at the coffee machine at the bean counter at 6.30am after some quality Bourbon at Simon’s… I am not 26 anymore…

Why did you have to break out the Cimicky Simon?

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

The freezer started tripping the power out. Mr Fix it couldn’t fix it so we wait for our new freezer which is due on Friday. The ice cream is safely ensconced in various freezers amongst the community! Of course it HAD to happen over the new year and just when the weather is getting hot!! Fear not you will have ice cream again soon…. I need to get it out of my freezer it’s far too tempting!!

Update on the ice cream… After much drama we finally have a new freezer, the ice cream will be back tomorrow and we will have a sale to welcome it back! So come on down over the weekend and sample our delicious ice cream at a bargain price!

Happy Christmas!

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

A big Happy Christmas to all our members. Christmas seems to have crept up like it never has before .. last minute shopping, drinking and eating has left us all pretty exhausted.

Yes, we of course had to elf ourselves:

Send your own ElfYourself eCards

Have a great break (if you’re lucky enough to get one), we’re taking Christmas day off, otherwise we’ll be back on deck from Boxing Day (the 26th) straight through to next Christmas!

Cheers
Sarah, Simon, T’Mara and Andrew.

The Dark Night breaks all our records

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

Even though we’re still a small store by conventional standards, we thought we’d stock up on The Dark Knight for the weekend (just gone) .. just in case. We do most of our buying through our buying group, but we stock up from local retailers on the Friday for our lead titles. From the retailers (eg JB, K-Mart), we buy more copies than we need, and can return them (unopened) for next week’s big titles (we can’t do this with our buying group). It’s a sign of the times .. through our group Dark Knight costs $29, and we can pickup copies from K-Mart for $25. New releases have truly become a commodity product that anyone can get from anywhere. Piracy runs rampant on these lead titles as well. It’s the art-house & independent stuff that give us the best margin, and our back-catalogue. More than ever, video stores have to look past the new releases, past the hits to make a decent buck.

But, the hits do burn brightly for a few weeks and The Dark Knight smashed all our records :-). We ended up with 23 copies in our system and all rented on Saturday night. Not bad! Check it out .. it’s a great movie.

come on…. only 2 stars for Xanadu?!

Saturday, December 13th, 2008

But it’s ….. “the dream that came through a million years.. that lasted through all the tears…” :) Did you all know that my brothers (one of which you know) used my Xanadu record as a frisby!

Leader Awards….

Friday, October 17th, 2008

The Leader awards were a great night, and woo hoo, we won!!!!!!
Congratulations to us!
I must admit I was quite miffed that I didn’t win the award I was nominated for… Best Customer Service.
Instead of running into the toilets and crying my little heart out though, or screaming out “It’s not fair!!!!” at the top of my lungs ,Sarah and I decided to dance like there was no tomorrow, and at one stage took over the entire dance floor. Simon and Andrew did join us for one dance, but they really didnt share our stamina or enthusiasm….we are, without a doubt “The Dancing Queens”…….
