Write Off!
Heard a dull thud this morning .. didn’t think anything of it until my neighbour hammered on the front door and yelled out ‘your cars been hit!’. And yep .. it’s been hit alright. Written off in fact. My beloved Golf GTi Mk II is completely mangled. I fell in love with the Mark 2’s when I lived in the UK in the early 90s. 2 litre 16 valve, GTi setup .. I remember hoot’n around London streets in one and it was a blast. The Mk II was a modders dream. The platform was so good VW themselves did a factory fit supercharged model (the G60) which was the apple of everyone’s eye. And yeah, the Peugot 205 GTi was hot as well, but I liked the golf. Back in Aus I revisited my windsurfing roots and bought a Mitsubishi L300 so I could keep all my gear inside and sail after work. I couldn’t afford the 4WD version so I whacked some big arse tires on (had to grind back the guards so they’d fit) and floated around Adelaide for a few years in that. But coming to Melbourne and then with a child on the way .. was time to get me a normal car .. a Mk II! Unfortunately in Oz we got the watered down version - 1.8l, 8v - but I had to own one so I got it. And what a l-e-m-o-n that happened to be! 2 gear boxes later, and with every service centre I knew scratching their heads going .. gee it’s very different to the Mark III huh? I still loved driving it. RIP old friend.
PS. the guy who hit me did a runner but left his bumper behind, licence plate intact! gotcha ..

Oh Simon!! That’s a bit sad…..but there’s nothing like forced change to shake things up a bit.

Wow gutted for you mate, not a nice thing to happen to your pride and joy, that must of been a big car or been travelling at speed to cause that much damage as the MK2 pretty darn strong and its totally twisted.
And I must say the Mk3 non Gti is pretty much the same mechanically as the Mk2 GTI.
Good luck tracking the driver down and I hope they prosecute them for leaving the scene of an accident.
