BRW Top 100 Web 2.0 Applications - the Alexa vote
Ross Dawson has been busy compiling 100 web 2.0 applications around Oz for Business Review Weekly. It’s a pretty good question, ‘are there actually 100 web2 apps downunder?‘, well here they all are:
I was also interested in a reader’s award .. all these apps are out in the open and people are voting with their patronage. So I’ve put the alexa traffic rank next to each entrant. This is unfair to those sites that have a consumer presence but also earn at the corporate level (eg gnoos, scouta), or sites that facilitate creation of other sites (eg 3eep) or operate via affiliates (eg Booking Angel). It’s also no statement of earnings AND alexa is by no means the best indicator of web traffic. But, keeping this all in mind, it’s as good a way as any that I can see for a cursory overview on what’s popular, what’s being used. So here’s the top 100 ordered by Alexa traffic rank:
I also did this to see where APPLEBOX fits in. By that list and our current traffic rank of 725,768, we’d be placed at #62. The amazing thing with APPLEBOX is that our traffic rank is generated directly out of Fairfield, Melbourne. Not a global audience like Red Bubble or an Australia wide audience like dlook, but traffic from one suburb in one city. That’s pretty cool.
As to why APPLEBOX didn’t get a guernsey? Dunno. I submitted, but perhaps it’s our retail mix that gets people confused. Checkout the scope and criteria offered and I’ll leave it up to others to judge. But gotta query why MyVirtualHome hit it at #6 when it’s not even a web app and Windows only?
In any case congrats to Ross for putting it all together and congrats to all the startups out there putting in the hard yards and getting stuff done!

Hi Pierre, I imagine you’ll be moving up the rank pretty quick! pxcream looks great (a red bubble for photographers perhaps). Nice work.

Simon,
Nice work. I have plenty of Alexa doubts also, but you manage to bump Kwoff up 30 places, so thanks very much!
Good luck with APPLEBOX

Thanks for the well wishes Dan .. and yep bb, let’s not forget that thorny issue of who can actually make a living out of all this! A revenue ordering would be very interesting indeed ..

Interesting.
But I’d only use Alexa for HEAVILY trafficed sites, like maybe the top 10. It is VERY bad at showing traffic with any accuracy, and only maginally ok at showing trends.
An exercise worth doing though. Always nice to encourage discussion about Aussie web companies.

I also have my doubts about Alexa, one moment you’re in the 300,000 and then your down at 400,000 - not sure how they work that out. Our traffic on http://www.clickfind.com.au (Online Marketing Platform) has gone up in the last few months by almost 40% and Alexa put us down a notch…
It’s nice to be able to say “My Alexa ranking is nnn, nnn” but I certainly won’t lose any sleep over its ranking.

Agreed to all who voice concern of Alexa .. it does seem very temperamental (our ranking also tends be up and down). If only hitwise figures were available for free. I did read a while ago Mozilla is considering putting opt-in traffic measurement into firefox which would be a welcome addition to the compete/quantcast/alexa/comscore/hitwise stats ..

The talk about Alexa / Compete etc shows the need for a decent traffic estimator for Aussie traffic. Google has taken a step towards this via sharing of analytics traffic (initially aggregated - but it will move towards site level sharing I’m sure). Their google trends for a website - just released - is another step.
My guess is that within 12 months there’ll be a good way to gestimate small sites’ traffic…and I’d guess itl be provided by Google before Hitwise offers it.
Nice alternate list.

I think you really have caught them out here.
I suspect the brw ranking occured out of a hat.
3eep at 4!!!! accurate or not that alexa ranking is very embarrasing for the likes of 3eep and Gnoos.

You missed a huge one - http://99designs.com. Crowdsourcing for graphic design work. Over 6 million pageviews a month. Founded out of Melbourne. Alexa: 40,488

Hi Mark .. yep I know 99 designs is storming home, which is awesome! Fantastic outcome but not such a surprise considering its lineage ;-). The 100 listed above is actually a re-org of Ross Dawson’s list here http://rossdawsonblog.com/weblog/archives/2008/06/official_launch.html . Unfortunately Ross missed you guys (oops), and that’s why you’re not mentioned. But by Alexa rank you’re in the top 10 .. nice job.
